Metal Detecting – Selecting The Right Metal Detector
Metal detecting is a little luck and a lot of skill. If you want to be a successful metal hunter, you have to know how to increase your odds of finding things of value. Having the right metal detector in your inventory can raise the odds of finding coins, metals and other valuables considerably.
Before you purchase any kind of metal detector, you have to know where you plan to do your hunting. Metal detectors have different abilities and specialties. Without knowing where you are going to go hunting, you will not know which ones you will need, and which ones will be superfluous.
One of the fundamentals that you have to consider is the terrain in which you are going to do your hunting. Carrying a large, bulky detector in a heavily wooded region is not advisable. You will want to have one that is compact and will permit you to walk through the brush easily. You will also want one that has a relatively small search coil.
Many detectors are waterproof. This feature is mandatory if you plan to search beaches and coastal areas. It should also be considered if you plan to look for metals in the woods. You never know when there might be a small creek or a shallow lake edge that you will want to investigate. You might stumble onto a newly formed swamp or an area that is still damp after a snow melt.
If you are intending to confine your hunting to desert areas or the prairies, you may not need to have one that is waterproof. You should instead concentrate on things will make searching in the desert easier. In the desert, you can take advantage of a large coil. You might also want to get a detector that is able to search at least 10 inches deep.
When considering different terrains, keep in mind how far down you intend to dig. Digging in some terrains is much easier than in others. In regions that are heavily wooded, digging can be difficult and laborious. Roots and fallen branches can make digging almost impossible. You may not want to dig any further than six inches. However, if you are doing your exploring in sandy places, you might want to think about metal detectors that have deeper capabilities.
Different terrains also present different challenges. Hunting for gold in a sandy desert is very different from trying to find old gold coins in a park. You have to have a good understanding about the mineral content. These can set off a metal detector. Therefore, you need to have a good understanding of what to expect so you can buy a detector that can filter out these false leads.
There are hundreds of places that you may want to try metal detecting, and each region presents its own set of challenges to the fortune hunter. If you are serious about wanting to find valuable treasures with your metal detector, you have to start by having the right one in your arsenal of hunting equipment.
